Where to buy draught real ale and craft beer to take away in Hampshire

Go straight to the list

It’s handy that we can now pick up bottled and canned real ale almost anywhere – supermarkets, corner shops, even some cafes an tea rooms now stock it.

However, while there are some nice bottle-conditioned ales out there, drinking real ale from bottles and cans doesn’t really do it for me. I much prefer it how it fresh, straight from the cask or keg.

In the past, this meant a visit to the pub (I’m not old enough to remember when off sales were common in pubs and inns).

Now though, an increasing number of off-licences and breweries are selling draught beer to take away for those of us who can’t get to our favourite pub when we want a fresh ale. Some pubs are also resurrecting off sales by selling beers to carry out in reusable flagons or cartons so you can continue drinking after last orders.

In my neck of the woods in Hampshire, there are a lot of places where you can pick up some fresh real ale and craft beer. However, availability and opening times vary. So it can be difficult to know where to head to when you’re in need of some draught ale to drink at home.

That’s why I’ve created this directory of shops, breweries and pubs in and around Hampshire where you can buy fresh ale and beer to take away.

Help me expand this list

My aim is to make this a comprehensive list of all shops, breweries and pubs that sell ale to take away in Hants and nearby towns. I’ll be updating it regularly.

If you would like to submit an entry, or if you see anything that’s incorrect or out-of-date, email me at tshallett [at] gmail.com, leave a comment below or get in touch with me on Twitter (@thomashallett).

A boring but essential disclaimer

Remember, I can’t guarantee that all of the information on this page is correct. If you don’t want a wasted journey, it’s best to get in touch with the brewery/shop/pub in question before you set out in case it’s closed or – horror – they’ve ran out of the ale you want.

Big thanks to the following people for helping me compile this list:

  • Graeme Hilton

Havant Brewery are unfortunately shutting down. I don’t know exactly when, but they’re trying to sell the brew kit.

Irving, Vibrant Forest & Alfred’s, also do take away; not sure on the details.

Luckily I live round the corner from Casks and Corks!

  • Adam

    Hi there Tom,

At Andwell Brewing Company we are able to supply beer either in takeaway format (1 and 2.4 Litre) or bag in box 10L and 20L. The shop usually has 5 different beers available for straight from the cask, as well as the whole range of bottled and canned products.

All the best and I look forward to seeing this blog develop.

  • Cheers Adam – I’ve added Andwells in under “Hook”. Let me know if I’ve got any info wrong.

  • Hi Graeme – I’ve just added your recommendations and updated the listing for Havant. Thanks for commenting!

    Hi Tom,

Ringwood Brewery, based down in Ringwood.

Ringwood Brewery was founded by Peter Austin in 1978, a man who is revered as “the father of British Micro-brewing”.

Ringwood Brewery’s first brewhouse was in a former bakery in the old station yard brewing Best Bitter and Fortyniner for a handful of local customers. 1979 saw the production of Old Thumper, which has since become the flagship brew. In 1986, having outgrown the Minty’s yard premises, the brewery moved to its present site, ironically the location of the old Tunks’ Brewery which ceased trading in 1821.

Today the brewery is able to produce circa 40,000 barrels of its renowned and distinctive beers. In addition to Razorback (previously Best Bitter), Fortyniner, and Old Thumper, we now brew the blonde Boondoggle and the deliciously warming XXXX Porter.

All 4 permanat beers are avalible to take away as well as one guest ale each month!

  • This is such an interesting idea, the list can be very handy for a holiday in Hampshire. 🙂
